What is a Ligament?

01/07/2025
The term ligament comes from the Latin word "ligare", which means "to bind" or "to tie." This reflects the primary function of ligaments, which is to bind or connect bones together at joints, providing stability and limiting movement. A ligament is a band of dense, fibrous connective tissue that connects bones to other bones at joints. Its primary function is to provide stability to the joint, limit excessive movement, and help maintain proper alignment of the bones.
